How to Slow Down the Ageing Process
Lets talk about “Skin Ageing”. We did a little search and these are some of the most googled questions regarding the phrase… “What does Ageing skin look like?, How does skin change with age?, What causes premature skin ageing?”. Well if you have googled any of these treatments, keep reading because we are about to answer them and give you the perfect guide on how to prevent and repair the signs!
Why do we age? Sadly the natural ageing process is genetic and cant be altered, however we can slow down this process and keep ourselves looking youthful for as long as we possibly can. The lifestyle we live and our harsh environment are of the main causes in why we age prematurely, let us explain that a bit more…
The ultraviolet rays from sunlight cause up to 80% of the visible signs of ageing we experience. Whats the difference in UV Rays? – UVA (are the rays that age the skin) and UVB (are the rays that burn the skin), both of these can penetrate deep into the skin and cause DNA damage and create harmful free radicals which degrade our collagen. This leaves our cells fragile and unable to protect and regenerate themselves. Leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone and texture and sagging skin.
ENVIRONMENT AND FREE RADICAL DAMAGE
“Free radicals” are something that you will almost certainly hear your skin therapist talking about. So what are they? Let us simplify it for you with a little science lesson.
Absolutely everything in the world, from human beings to the air around us, is made of molecules. Molecules are made of atoms and atoms are made of pairs of electrons. But when an atom is missing an electron, that’s when we talk of free radicals.
Free radicals can damage the skin by trying to grab an extra electron from atoms in the skin. When atoms are taken away from molecules in the skin, it causes damage to our skin’s DNA that can speed along skin ageing. If you are struggling to picture that, think of if you cut an apple in half and put it out in the sun unprotected, what happens to it? Its oxidises and becomes discoloured, the same thing happens to your skin.
Our environment can cause free radical damage in many different ways, particularly from pollution and UV. Pollution can be anything from cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, tiny particles in the air and ozone can seep into the skin and trigger free radical production. Now when we said UV, we weren’t just talking about UV rays, blue light from screens is very similar in wavelength to harmful UV light and has been found to cause hyper-pigmentation and free radical damage. IR (infrared) radiation derived from sunlight also penetrates the skin and has been found to cause free radical production and even collagen degradation. Sunscreen is a MUST in your skincare routine!
Glycation is actually one of the least talked about factors in ageing, it is caused from accumulated sugar from the diet. These pesky excess sugar molecules bind themselves to your collagen and elastin fibres, causing advanced glycation end products. How does this age your skin? Well as a result, the collagen is deformed and cellular turnover is reduced which leads to sagging, devitalised skin. Don’t worry, a little bit of chocolate here and there never hurt anybody.
One lifestyle habit in particular, smoking, triggers an uprising of free radicals which cause excessive damage. They intensify the effects of sun exposure, leading you to show signs of ageing before your time. Even stress from the busy world we live in can accelerate cellular ageing. Your lifestyle choices actually have a really big impact on your skin and being mindful of these choices is key to help prevent premature ageing.
So now that you know what to be mindful of, how do protect your skin? Here is our product and treatment guide to that lasting youthful glow!
